I am a solo singer/songwriter. My music is mostly soft although my songs could easily be performed in mostly any style.
For me, it's all about the song. That mysteriously magical thing that happens when a lyric is married to a melody. The writing process is invigorating and exciting while simultaneously being exasperating and difficult. It is that moment when music is being composed and a lyric is being written when I am truly the "artist at his easel." The creative process continues when the song is brought into the studio to be recorded because, as in writing, the production and arrangement processes also have their own sets of challenges. Those challenges are always dictated by the song itself and the task at hand at that moment is to be true to the song and carefully craft a recording that reflects what the song is about. Part three, for me, is to then take that song and perform it. It is the purest form of displaying this work of art called a song and is the only place where the magic of the creation is reflected back to me from a room full of interested listeners. And at that moment it is only as magical as the audience makes me believe it is. My CDs are all available on CDBaby.com.

Story behind the song
After my divorce in 1991 I was sitting on my bed and I noticed, on the table next to the bed, something sticking out from the pages of an old Bible I had since I was a kid. When I opened the Bible I immediately recognized one of the roses I had given to my wife on the day we were married nine years earlier. I had pressed the rose between the pages of the Bible to preserve it forever. The rose was randomly placed in the pages of the Book of Deuteronomy. Nine years of blessings and mistakes rushed through my memory. It was more than a year later that I finally wrote a song inspired by that profound moment and titled the song, "Deuteronomy Rose." In August of 1992 I recorded the song at Pro Media Recording Studios in Gainesville, Florida. David Smadbeck played the piano and programmed the drum machine. Robin MacBlane worked with Mark Pinske (Frank Zappa's producer) to produce and engineer the recording. I remember it was a long recording session and we ended the session deep in the night. My son, Alex, was there as was Robin's daughter, Shannon. Alex was only six years old. Shannon was twelve years old. The two children played Monopoly in the control room of the studio during that long recording session. When Pro Media folded we lost the master recording to "Deuteronomy Rose" and we thought the recording was lost forever. Recently Robin found a cassette we had made of the session. We processed the audio signal on the cassette and the result is the recording on this site. I don't consider it one of my best songs but it is significant in many ways. I hope you like it.
Lyrics
Funny I should find Here, in my darkest time, The rose Saved forever But forever's not the way it always goes--- Clearly at the time We both believed together we'd grow old And brave the weather But the weather grew too cold And our hearts just froze--- Deuteronomy Rose Damn this foolish heart For it knows where hearts should never go I suppose broken hearts are always left to hold A Deuteronomy Rose Isn't it a shame We had so much to gain Although you and I weren't always sure Of every road we chose I'm as much to blame I, with my stubbornness, Exposed our lives to uncertainty But, why, I swear I never will know Deuteronomy Rose Damn this foolish heart For it knows where hearts should never go I suppose broken hearts are always left to hold A Deuteronomy Rose Love leaves no reason Maybe it'd be easier to just let it go Deuteronomy Rose Damn this foolish heart For it knows where hearts should never go I suppose broken hearts are always left to hold A Deuteronomy Rose
